Guide: All about Raspberry

What is a Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi 4

The Raspberry Pi is what we call a nanocomputer. The size of a credit card, it is equipped with the bare necessities:

  • An ARM microprocessor
  • RAM memory
  • A video card
  • An ethernet card
  • The Wi-fi
  • The Bluetooth

► Main goal

The main objective of the creator of the Raspberry Pi, Eben Upton, was to create a very accessible tool to enable all students to learn computer development and programming more effectively.

Sold around 35 € in France, the Raspberry Pi quickly became very popular and it has sold more than 20 million copies since its launch.

► First use

Remember that unless you order a complete kit, if you order a Raspberry Pi, you will only receive the motherboard. So you will have no case and no power supply.

That is why it is highly recommended to order directly a complete kit with at least one power supply and a housing. Kits usually contain a micro-SD card and an SD card adapter that will be required to install an operating system on your card.

Why use a Raspberry

Although many competitors have entered the nanocomputer market in recent years, the Raspberry Pi remains the undisputed leader.

Why? The most obvious reason is its price. The goal of the Raspberry Pi Foundation was to create a card so inexpensive that it could almost be disposable.

Project with a Raspberry: TimeToEat

During my final year in STI2D SIN, we had to carry out a final project for our diploma exam. I had an idea with my friends to create a project that will allow us to know at what exact moment there will be no more people in the queue of our canteen. Being in charge of the software part, I decided to do this project with a Raspberry Pi.
